Liberty Hall

One of the superb concert halls in Lawrence, besides this one, is Liberty Hall. Since Punch Brothers were in town this past Saturday (!)  it was the perfect excuse to check out the venue. The tickets (purchased ahead of time) were $20 with a $5.75 service/tax making tickets $25.75 total. Doors opened at 8pm, show was at 9pm, and since we had never been to Liberty Hall before we decided it would be best to arrive early. Good thing we did, because the line was most definitely snaking around the block…

Once inside, we headed upstairs to see if there were any seats available since the main floor was standing only. Fortunately there were! These seats are quite nice, too – red velvet and plush (such a comfy way to enjoy live music). Arriving early to concerts provides plenty of time to get drinks, and Liberty Hall has great prices, but cash only! I bought a pale ale and bottle of water for $6.25.

Liberty Hall is such a beautiful venue to soak in; the color, space and acoustics are really exceptional. Chris Thile even made a point to mention during the concert that he thinks Liberty Hall is one of the best music concerts in the country!

Aoife opened at 9pm, and her voice was like warm apple pie on a crisp autumn day. Very calming, but raspy enough to provide interest. She was a great opener. Then of course, Punch Brothers took main stage!

Punch Brothers!

If you’ve never heard Punch Brothers, they’re a progressive bluegrass band, or what’s known now as “newgrass.” What a riot we had; the boys were loving each minute as much as the howling crowd! Punch Brothers make the event all that much more fun with their witty humor and crowd interaction. And if there’s any need to further explain the party, Chris Thile (mandolin player and lead singer) broke two cords throughout the course of the evening. He somehow managed to press on with a six string mandolin!

It was indeed one hell of an evening and quite the gorgeous concert hall. Cheers!

Hi! I just came upon your blog and am so happy to see my lovely town exhibited in such a nice way. One of my favorite places here is liberty hall. You must go see a movie some time if you haven’t yet.. where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a free state beer and the plush red seats :)
